BMW Oil Leaks: Why You Should Not Ignore Them

Oil leaks are a common issue on many BMW models, particularly as the vehicle gets older or the kilometres increase.

A small oil leak may initially appear as only a few drops underneath the vehicle, but it can gradually become worse. If an oil leak is left untreated, it may result in low engine oil levels, burning oil smells, smoke, oil contamination and potentially serious engine damage.

Common BMW Oil Leak Areas

BMW engines have several areas where oil leaks can develop over time. Common leak points include:

  • Rocker cover gasket: A worn or damaged gasket can allow engine oil to escape around the top of the engine.
  • Oil filter housing gasket: A leaking oil filter housing gasket can cause oil to spread around the side of the engine.
  • Sump gasket: The sump and its gasket can develop leaks, resulting in oil collecting underneath the vehicle.
  • Turbo oil lines: Turbocharger oil supply and return lines can deteriorate and develop leaks.
  • Timing cover area: Gaskets and seals around the timing cover can leak as they age.
  • Oil seals and O-rings: Various seals throughout the engine can become brittle or worn over time.

Signs Your BMW May Have an Oil Leak

There are several warning signs that may indicate your BMW is leaking engine oil:

  • Oil spots or puddles underneath the vehicle
  • Low engine oil warning
  • Needing to top up engine oil frequently
  • Burning oil smell
  • Smoke coming from the engine bay
  • Oil residue around the engine
  • Oil collecting underneath the vehicle
  • Oil contamination around hoses or electrical components

Even if the leak appears minor, it is worth having it inspected to determine exactly where the oil is coming from.

Why You Should Not Ignore a BMW Oil Leak

A leaking engine can gradually lose oil, reducing the amount of lubrication available to critical internal components.

If the oil level becomes too low, increased friction and heat can occur inside the engine. In severe cases, this can result in major engine damage.

Oil leaks can also spread onto other components. For example, oil leaking near hot engine or exhaust components may produce a burning smell or smoke.

The sooner an oil leak is diagnosed, the easier it may be to prevent the problem from becoming a larger and more expensive repair.

BMW Oil Leak Diagnosis

At WA Auto Service Center, we inspect the vehicle carefully to identify the actual source of the oil leak before recommending repairs.

Our inspection can include checking the rocker cover, oil filter housing, sump, turbo oil lines, timing cover area, seals and other common BMW oil leak points.

Once the source of the leak has been identified, we provide a clear repair quote before carrying out the work.

Don't Wait Until a Small Leak Becomes a Big Problem

If you notice oil underneath your BMW, smell burning oil, see smoke from the engine bay or regularly need to top up your engine oil, don't ignore it.

Getting an oil leak inspected early can help protect your engine and may prevent a small repair from becoming a much larger and more expensive problem.
